SEC Commissioner, Mark Uyeda, spoke at the National Society of Compliance Professionals (“NSCP”) Conference recently about various topics.
Although his opinions are his own individual views, and do not represent the full Commission or other Commissioners, there are some important insights one can take from his discussion.
- Uyeda understands the amount of valuable resources required to handle the new rules implemented in 2023 and the likelihood of similar regulatory actions in 2024.
- Uyeda admits that compliance deadlines starting this fall and continuing into 2024 “have not left much breathing room” for compliance professionals.
- Resources will be stretched for Firms, and the SEC’s agenda is putting the compliance capabilities of Firms to the test.
- Many Firms are scrambling to try and keep up with compliance changes, and reliance on compliance consultants has increased.
The Commissioner clearly states to compliance professionals that “you have your work cut out for you”.
With the SEC showing no signs of slowing its implementation of numerous rules and amendments, the time of adjusting to changes “on the fly” has long passed us.
As resources are stretched, Firms are looking for cost effective compliance solutions that allow them to focus on their business while avoiding significant regulatory burdens.
In a constantly changing regulatory environment, it may grow increasingly difficult to avoid the pitfalls of “do it yourself” compliance.
